Thoughts and Observations: New York Jets Training Camp 7/31/13

The Jets were back to work this morning after a day off yesterday. Here are some thoughts and observations from this morning’s practice:

  • SHELDON RICHARDSON JOINS “TOUR DE FRANCE”: Remember Westhoff’s analogy with the guys on the bike?  Well, Sheldon Richardson joined that group today.  There was no word as of the posting of this article as to the reason, hopefully it is a “pitch count”, not an injury.
  • DEE MILLINER TAKES THE FIELD: Milliner took the field today, in a limited basis, which is to be expected after being away for so long.  He was out there early, actually spent some time with Cro, before heading to the bike for the rest of practice.
  • CHRIS IVORY LIMITED: A situation to watch, Ivory was still limited today in practice.  Here’s hoping that he will be on the field in full soon.
  • BILLY CUNDIFF IS STILL COMPETING: A while back, it was reported that Billy Cundiff had been released, giving the kicking job to incumbent Nick Folk.  Apparently, that was incorrect as Cundiff is still around giving Folk some competition.  Folk made all of his kicks today, while Cundiff missed one.
  • MIXED REVIEWS ON THE QUARTERBACKS: As usual, I am not going to go into the numbers, but the onlookers had mixed things to say.  Some said Geno looked bad, some say he looked good, and the same with Mark Sanchez.  I guess the biggest thing to glean is that nobody is taking a strong lead.
  • GOOD DAY FOR THE DEFENSIVE LINE: The group that has the potential to be elite had a good day today.  Kenrick Ellis knocked down a Sanchez pass, nearly picking it off.  Mo Wilkerson nearly got to another Sanchez pass.  It was an active day for that group.

With the Green and White game on Saturday, and the first preseason game on the 9th, the team will be back to work tomorrow.

I just read the NY Jets contacted the Tour de France to borrow some more bikes!! Hopefully these “minor injuries” don’t start piling up on these guys like last season! Glad Deee finally arrived! I’m excited about Ellis, the Jets knew he was a development project when they drafted him, its early yet, but that gamble might be paying off now. He appears to have taken a step forward, for several days now he has been gaining attention from those covering camp. I read two days ago he blew through a hole and leveled Powell in the backfield, that is no easy task. If he and Richardson can stay healthy, my concerns about our run defense may finally be resolved! Now our running game has me concerned, Ivory still limited, Goodson is missing in action, Mcknight still hasn’t secured a spot. Its getting thin in the backfield, Bright spot, I read some great reports on Bohanan so far, the Jets might have stole one with this kid!

agreed about the backfield thinness., otherwise I am getting kind of excited

Final QB stats: Sanchez, with starting unit: 3-for-10, 1 INT, 2 near-INTs, 1 drop on would-be TD to Hill. Geno 6-for-9, 2 sacks. I think those stats point to a clear winner today. The worst description about Geno’s performance was decent. Sanchez never even approached that level. I’m really not trying to pick sides since as Jet fans we just want the best QB to start, but if I were Mark I’d be VERY WORRIED.

    • Joe Willie

Sanchez in his 5th yr and he goes 3-11 a pick and 2 almost s ——that’s pretty brutal —IF you can read the writing on the wall the QB race is over —-look for the Jets to name Geno the starter sooner then later—no later the preseason game 2 -like Seattle did last year (Idziks last team)–and then the Jets play Geno sparingly in the rest of the preseason games and give him all the snaps in practice and focus on getting him ready for the reg season. Dont over play Geno in the preseason–1. dont chance him getting hurt-2. Tampa and the pats wont have a lot of geno film to work with.

I agree, Mark needs to be nervous.
