Roster Moves: New York Jets Sign 3 and Release 3, Billy Cundiff Biggest Name

John Idzik put in some work this afternoon, let’s get to a roundup of it for you.

The Jets released three today, 2 UDFA’s and one that was in Raiders’ training camp last season. The three players are K Brett Maher, WR Thomas Mayo, and T Mark Popek.

Two of the three signees are unknowns, one a long snapper, the other a tackle. LS Pat Scales joined the NFL in 2011 as a UDFA with the Baltimore Ravens. T Jeffrey Shugarts spent 2012 on the Browns and Bills practice squad.

Now the biggest name is the competition brought in to go against Nick Folk. Last year it was Josh Brown, in 2013, it’s Billy Cundiff. Cundiff has kicked for the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins in his career. He was selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl and was named First-Team All Pro in 2010 after making 26-of-29 field goals (89.7%) on the season. He has made 139-of-184 career field goal attempts (75.5%) with a career long of 56 yards and has made 12-of-14 career postseason field goal attempts (85.7%) with a playoff long of 48 yards. He was originally signed by the Cowboys in 2002 after playing his college career at Drake.

Cundiff might be remembered recently for the missed kick in the AFC title game two years ago that played a big part in sending the Patriots to the rematch Super Bowl against the Giants.

I see Folk as the favorite here, but anything can happen.
