Quick Pre-Camp Thoughts on New York Jets DT Damon Harrison

Sean Lester Durham’s thoughts on the Jets young lineman.

Jets have a lot of new faces on the roster and tons of underrated players as well but one of my favorites is DT Damon Harrison aka Snacks aka Big Dame aka Watermelon Jones (I made the last one up).

What I see in Harrison is essentially what you want to see in every football player on your team as a fan; hunger, pride, skill, athleticism and hunger, PLUS he’s hungry. Harrison didn’t see much playing time last season outside of a brief appearance last season when DT Kenrick Ellis went down with an injury. But, even in that brief appearance Harrison showed his potential and hunger, attacking the backfield and ball carrier with tenacity.

Yeah it’s virtually impossible to sit here and predict Harrison will be productive this season as the Jets have yet to even begin camp but it’s not impossible to predict that if and when Harrison is given another chance to show case his talent, he’ll go hard and give Jets fans something to be proud of.

I’m rooting for the Jets to put the best most talented starting D-line group out there on Sundays and I would not be surprised if Harrison ends up being apart of that group as a starter or a rotational player that seems to be getting noticeably more playing time as the season progresses. Some people would probably classify Harrison as an “underrated” player but I don’t underrate him, I know he’s a special talent and will show that one day.

When we look back at this season, The Jets will have the #1 defense in the afc.

They will be good, better then last year, but doubtful its even #1 in the division. They are young, fast and playing a complex Ryan defense, expect the breakdowns, the miscues, the gap assignments missed etc. They will flash and keep us competitive in games, but hardly a #1 defense quite yet. The talent is there, fans need to sit back, be patient and watch this group develop!

harrison’s biggest obstacle may be our depth and quality of starters. we’ve got an awfully deep defensive line and secondary. between having enough defensive linemen to supply two teams and more corners than an octogon, combined with the scarcity of talent on offense maybe we should give cro more reps at wr and richardson some reps at tight end. i know richardson was used to return punts and we all saw cro draw double teams last year. if hill can’t draw two defenders let’s use cro.

No way do you use Cro to draw double teams on offense! It was a bozo move on Rex and Saprano’s part last season! He’s your #1 defensive back, no way do you increase his chance of injury by allowing him to play both ways! The Jets will have a younger faster look on D this season, there will be plenty of breakdowns along the way, but the talent is in place for the D to keep us in the game. Let’s hope they can create offense, without depending on gimmicks!
