This morning I wanted to continue a bit more discussion on a guy that Jets’ fans are still as excited as ever to have on their football team. His name is Chris Ivory.
We did a lot study oh Ivory and his competition in a post that broke out yesterday. Today, I wanted to take a different look at Ivory.
We all have wanted Chris Ivory on this team for quite some time, have we not? From my experience, his name was the first on most fans’ lists. So, I thought, simply based on the numbers, how would things have different if Ivory had been here since day one.
Remember we are not incorporating game situations here, just pure statistical numbers.
Take a look at the year of 2010, the year that Ivory led the Saints in rushing. That year, Chris Ivory ran the ball 137 times for 716 yards and 5 TDs.
In 2010, the Jets were still running the “Ground and Pound”, so I took a look at who led the Jets in carries in 2010, LaDainian Tomlinson. That year, Tomlinson ran the ball 219 times for 914 yards and 6 TDs. So, if we put Chris Ivory into that team, and put him in the role of lead ballcarrier, using the 219 rushes as Ivory’s rushes, here is what the math gives us:
219 attempts, 1,145 yards and 7-8 TDs.
Think about what might have been if the Jets had those numbers behind “Cloud of Dust” Greene. Ivory is a physical runner, as is Greene. Think about how work down the defenses would have been.
And how much they will be with Goodson and/or Bilal Powell.
The comparison doesn’t work after 2010 because Ivory had injuries to fight after that year, but the point is a simple one.
Had Chris Ivory been on the team since the beginning, would the Jets have been better? Sure they would have. Are they going to be a lot better with Ivory on the team? My feelings are an unmitigated yes, but like I always say.
Time will tell.
