Tonight, instead of taking a look at a UDFA, we are going to spotlight a veteran brought in by John Idzik. He has spent time with the Browns, the Bears, and more recently, the Chargers, and now he comes to New York to help void the space that Sione Po’uha previously occupied.
The spotlight tonight is on 8 year veteran defensive lineman Antonio Garay.
Antonio Garay is a terrific size of an NFL defensive lineman, standing at 6’4″, and weighing 320 pounds. Here is a look at his career stats:
|2012||San Diego Chargers||8||0||16||7||9||1.0||–||0||–||–||0.0||–||–||0|
|2011||San Diego Chargers||16||13||57||37||20||2.5||–||0||–||–||0.0||–||–||0|
|2010||San Diego Chargers||16||15||48||37||11||5.5||–||0||–||–||0.0||–||–||0|
|2009||San Diego Chargers||2||0||5||3||2||0.0||–||0||–||–||0.0||–||–||0|
For anyone not familiar with Garay’s work, myself included, here is some video on him:
He is the prototypical nose tackle, at least in my opinion. His strength is what sticks out most. The video is limited, I know, but did you see how he took the Colts’ lineman and drove him back into Manning? That is a strong man. He would take up two men to keep him out of the backfield, letting the rest of the guys do their stuff.
Garay is an excellent tackler as well. He wraps up the ball carrier like he is from a textbook.
Whatever role Garay plays on this team, either starting or coming off of the bench, he will do an excellent job. We should look forward to seeing this man play in the Green and White. Kudos to John Idzik for the signing.
