Pat Kirwan has the Jets taking a pass rusher in the first round this April

Pat Kirwan’s Latest Mock Draft: The New York Jets Select…………

Last week, CBS Sports insider Pat Kirwan gave us his latest update to his mock draft. Previous, he has chosen Dion Jordan to be joining the Green and White when April 25th rolls around. Let’s see who his update from this past week has the Jets choosing at #9………..

Mingo has rare athletic ability, similar to Jason Taylor when he came out of college. Mingo can rush standing up or with his hand on the ground. It’s been a while since the Jets had a player like Mingo.

Feel free to read his entire updated mock by clicking here.

I am not a big fan of equating a player in college with a big time player in the NFL, I think it puts too much expectation on the player.  But, Mingo has a lot of potential which cannot be ignored.

We have said it before, he is a bit small to be an effective every-down back.  He has some trouble with linemen if they get locked up on him, and some bulk would help.  He needs a bit more size.  But, you cannot ignore his ability to get to the quarterback.

Mingo is so fast, that he closes on the quarterback before he can have a chance to get away.  It’s been a long time since the Jets had a player like that, Kirwan is absolutely right.

And the Jets could do a lot worse than taking this guy.

If Jordan,Jones, and Mingo were all sitting their when the jets pick 9th it would be a very tough call to make? If Jordan goes before the jets pick and Jones and Mingo
are sitting their at the 9th pick I would take Jones bad combine or not? I just think
he’s going to be a better player than Mingo in the long run? I want to make it clear
that Mingo will be a very good(if not great) player its just Jones will be better!!

I think I agree with you. I see more upside in Jones than Mingo, although both of them will be quite good.

I just looked at Pat’s last mock draft and he has the jets taking Jones 9th! I wonder
why he changed his mind unless it has something to do with his poor combine
showing? By the way I noticed he had Tavas Austin going 16th to the Rams!!

I saw that in his mock for this week. You know how these things go, they have to give a variety of scenarios with their mocks…..or maybe he listened to us LOL

My order is this: Jordan, Jones, Mingo. I think Jones will be the best at getting to the QB and applying pressure, but Jordan is my #1 because he can rush or drop back in coverage.

I also only take Combine/Pro Day numbers with a grain of salt – look at Vernon Gholston. Jones has been a double digit sack guy in the SEC for 2 years in a row. He has quick feet and can also adjust to the run game pretty well. Just because he is not the fastest player in a straight line run doesn’t mean he can’t get to the QB at the next level. I’d rather have a player with technique and skill than raw athletic ability.

I think we have too many needs and I’d prefer to trade down here. Plus, I have a feeling that either Jones or Mingo are going to drop into the teens anyway.

I wouldn’t be too disappointed in them for trading down. You are a regular reader so I am sure you know my feeling, picks, picks, and more picks.

I can agree with your order too. I love Jordan, and Jones too, ahead of Mingo. You are right about 40 times…I don’t care if he takes 90 minutes to run the 40, if he can get to the QB it is fine by me. Jones would be a terrific Jet IMO.
