Well, one member of the current Jets coaching staff may be moving on, and it’s a prominent member at that.
The newly acquired head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Doug Marrone, is looking to put his staff together, and a Jets coach is on his radar. It was reported that the Bills asked for permission to speak with Mike Pettine about coming on board as defensive coordinator. His contract is technically not “expired” until the end of the month, so permission is still needed. Late yesterday, it was reported that the Jets have granted that permission, so Mike Pettine will interview for the defensive coordinator job in Buffalo.
As the day ended yesterday, I heard from some fans that were alarmed by this. My recommendation, don’t be. For one, this defense is Rex Ryan’s defense. It was his brainchild from their days together in Baltimore, Pettine is the defensive coordinator because he needs someone in the role. This defense will not take a major hit if Pettine is somewhere else. Actually, some have indicated that Rex’s relationship with Pettine was strained by the middle of the past season. Remove that working relationship from the equation, the defense might even get better.
It is also out there that Pettine has been Manish Mehta’s “source”. According to one article, they were friendly before coming to New York, and he has been his source the whole time, so much so that the Jets put a phone in his office that they could monitor. The Jets don’t need an anonymous source giving out secrets from the inside.
Buffalo, if you want him. Take him.
