Remember, Tannenbaum Out Doesn’t Guarantee Ryan In

Word is that the Jets are going to make the move as early as later today, to fire Mike Tannenbaum. Fans have been rejoicing all night long, the Twitter time-lines have been thrilled. Jets fans have been calling for this for weeks now, that they are unhappy with the decisions Tanny has made, and he should be gone.

The resounding opinion is also that Rex Ryan will not be fired today, and will be initially retained for 2013. Many fans, including myself, feel that this is the right move. Rex got a lot out of this roster, and has earned another chance to turn this around, with the quarterback situation in check. But just remember, Rex will not be guaranteed to return. It will depend upon who is hired as the general manager. Often times, a general manager will want to bring in a coach they are comfortable with, and requiring the new GM to retain Rex is a bad idea. If the GM and the head coach are at odds, things will not improve. They will never agree on moves, depth charts, ..etc, and it will be a disaster.

So, even if he isn’t fired today, the jury is still out on Rex’s future. Stay tuned.
