BREAKING: Greg McElroy to be Backup Quarterback Sunday for Jets

Well, McElroy’s play at least earned him something.

Jane McManus of ESPN New York is reporting out of Jets practice that Greg McElroy will be the backup quarterback against the Jaguars on Sunday, behind Mark Sanchez. Rex Ryan had left this topic up for debate all week, citing the need to monitor how Tim Tebow is progressing with his injured ribs, but this appears to be the scenario. Coach Ryan has not made the announcement yet, but all signs are pointing in this direction.

Whether people want to believe this is a conspiracy to keep Tebow on the bench, they have to look out for his health first. I have a hard time believing that Rex wouldn’t active him in Jacksonville if he was ready to go. He would want the guy on the field in some role in the town that his legend began. I am sure that he must not be ready if this is the direction that they are going. Heck, if he was healthy, Rex would probably send him out as a captain for the coin toss.

Rex announced at his press conference that the QB depth chart will be a game-time decision.
