You may or not not remember, prior to the 2009 draft, Pete Carroll had something to say regarding Mark Sanchez. When Sanchez declared himself eligible for the NFL draft, coach Carroll was outspoken, saying that Mark was not NFL ready. He felt he would serve himself better by remaining at USC for another year. Did Jets coach Rex Ryan get offended by this:
“I’d say whatever it took to get the guy to stay with me,” Ryan joked. “I’d say ‘Oh yeah, whatever, son, you’re not ready to play.’ Deep down he knew he was ready, but since this guy has a ton of ability, you don’t want to lose that. I put myself in his shoes and I don’t want to lose my quarterback.”
I like that Rex can joke about it and be proprietary, but Carroll’s remarks were likely more about the fact that Mark Sanchez had only started 16 games before declaring himself eligible for the NFL draft. In retrospect, Pete was probably right that Mark needed a bit more seasoning. It’s all moot now, though, as Mark is the QB. We will see just where he is come Sunday afternoon at 4 PM.
