We have talked a great deal about how the Jets could use another weapon out of the backfield at running back. Well, one of the backs that they do have, has earned the trust of his team, and therefore playing time.
Bilal Powell, second year running back out of Louisville, has earned the job as third down back, beating out the incumbent, Joe McKnight.
Bilal Powell impressed during training camp, although he only showed brief glimpses of his ability during preseason games. He averaged 3.5 yards per carry during training camp, which is certainly an improvement over his whopping 1.6 yard average from 2011. After a promising 4.8 yards per carry in 2010, McKnight was disappointing in 2011 with a 3.1 yard average, so the job was certainly right for the taking.
The question is whether or not Bilal Powell can hold up his end of the bargain for an entire season. He has been good during workouts, but mediocre during the games so far at best. Only time will tell if the Jets can win with what they have.
