Well, it looks like we have our replacement punter.
A short while ago, we reported that the Jets had waived punter TJ Conley. There was some speculation that Matt McBriar would be the replacement, but he was not signed. New York Newsday’s Kimberly Martin learned, and has reported that the Jets have signed punter Robert Malone.
Malone was most recently a member of the San Diego Chargers this preseason. Before that, he played for the Lions in 2011, recording only 5 punts. His most extensive playing time came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He punted in 12 games that year, with an average of 41.5 yards per punt. He was a specialist at dropping punts in side the 20, dropping 17 of his 52 punts that deep, which amounted to 32.7% of his punts.
If he can be that good with the Jets, he will turn out to be a real asset, as with the type of game the Jets are planning on playing in 2012, field position will be of the utmost importance.
