Jets Safety Eric Smith Suffers MCL Sprain in Preseason Opener

Aug 15, 2011; Houston, TX, USA; New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie (31) talks to safety Eric Smith (33) on the sideline against the Houston Texans in the second quarter at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

The Jets suffered one injury blow last night, although it isn’t as bad as it could have been.

Safety Eric Smith left the game in the second quarter last night with hip and knee injuries. The X-Ray taken last night turned up negative, but an MRI has revealed an MCL sprain of the left knee. Yes it’s the same knee that Smith underwent orthroscopic surgery on during the offseason, but this is nowhere near as serious. They are expecting to have Eric back for the season opener.

He will be in sub packages at safety behind LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell, as well as a big contributor on special teams.
