Upon entering the Jets facility with his players for the first time, new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano made one thing clear, that he wants to play physically.
The Jets are getting back to the Ground and Pound. They believe in it, and they believe that they will return to the success of the past:
“We can lead this league in rushing again,” running backs coach Anthony Lynn said. “I have no question.”
They are headed back to the ground and pound, but will be modifying how they will employ it just a bit. Let me explain.
In previous seasons under Bill Callahan and Brian Schottenheimer, the Jets used mainly zone blocking schemes. This puts more of an emphasis on lateral movement by the offensive linemen, and the running back reading the defense and choosing a lane based on that read.
However, coach Sparano will be going with more of a gap scheme of blocking, which is designed to push the defender in front of the lineman back, creating forward push, and with the back going to one spot.

Alan has been a passionate Jets fan since 1985. Obviously, that means he is a glutton for punishment, as he has suffered through many Jets disappointments. He remembers Mark Gastineau's late hit in the 1986 AFC Divisional Playoff game like it was yesterday. There have been many more failures than successes, but through it all, Alan has remained true to the Gang Green. He has been blogging for the Jets on various websites for the past 5-6 years. He lives and breathes the NY Jets all year round, and is committed to bringing the Jets passion to "The Jet Press" on a daily basis.
