There were a lot of depth problems along the offensive line in 2011. Coach Ryan’s solution? Learn more than one position. Here is what he said after practice yesterday:
“The NFL, you need hidden depth,” Ryan said. “We saw that last year. You need a guy that plays center. You need two, three guys that play center. I need to be able to play guard. I’m a guard; I need to learn center, maybe tackle, maybe tight end. All that stuff is hidden depth because you don’t have the numbers.”
The Jets have started to build versatility through competition. We learned just yesterday that Vladimir Ducasse will be in competition with incumbent Matt Slauson, who is coming off of surgery, for the left guard position, sparking the talks of the “Summer of Vlad” yesterday.
We also have competition at right tackle, assuming Jeff Otah passes his physical before the deadline on July 31st.
We certainly need the depth along that len.
