Jets Coach Rex Ryan Gives a Glimpse Into Draft Strategy

Coach Ryan was at a charity event Wednesday, and he took a moment to give an idea about how the Jets may be approaching the draft next week.

“If you just try to reach for need and all that kind of stuff, sometimes that’s not the best thing to do,” Ryan said Wednesday. “Taking the best player, that generally works out the best for you. When we traded up to get Shonn Greene, we already had three running backs, but Shonn Greene was a great player. That was a great move for us.”

Of course he had to talk Tim Tebow.

“The thing about Tim is he’s such a great athlete,” he said. “Obviously, everybody knows we’re going to use him in the Wildcat. The guy that really brought the Wildcat to the National Football League, Tony Sparano, is now our offensive coordinator. I’m just excited to see what Tony is going to with the players we have.”

Of course this is what Rex will say about Tebow. The thing I am not sure about is the draft strategy. I see his point, that if you focus on one position you might lose out on a gem. But in the Jets case, I think the need for a pass rusher in the first round is so strong, they would be foolish to ignore.
