This afternoon, we take a look at a guy that the Jets are taking some serious interest in. The player himself even tweeted, in surprise, that the Jets had their entire staff out to take a look at him today. Spotlight, Chandler Jones, DE from Syracuse University.

For a full scouting report, take a look at our friends at withthefirstpick.com

He weights in at 6’5″ 265 pounds, and ran a 4.87 40 yard dash at the combine.

He had a knee injury that severely limited Jones in 2011, registering only 4.5 sacks.

Pros: He’s got a lot of range as a tackler, and he gets off the snap brilliantly.  He sets the edge well, which was a problem for the Jets in 2011.  He also is an excellently effective wrap up tackler.  He uses his strengths as a pass rusher to his advantage.

Cons: He’s a bit undersized at 6’5″ 265 pounds, and could have a bit of trouble with the better defensive tackles in the league.  He doesn’t possess elite quickness, see his 40 yard dash time above.  He sometimes takes too long to get to full speed off the line.

Take a look at the video of some highlights, and you be the judge:

If he’s healthy, he could be a good fit. That tape shows a fast guy off the line. He may be a little bit raw, but if he is coachable he appears to have a lot of upside. His build reminds me a bit of JPP from the Giants, although obviously nowhere near as polished. Could be an interesting pick in the middle rounds.
