When it rains it pours in Florham Park, NJ for the New York Jets.
The Jets are set to jump in to the free agency party with 4 visits scheduled for today. 2 QBs, Drew Stanton and Brady Quinn are scheduled to appear, along with safety Reggie Nelson and WR Chaz Schillens.
The most logical of this group will be Chaz Schillens to add depth to the wide receiving corp. Jets new wide receiver coach Sanjay Lal is formerly the same positions coach with the Oakland Raiders. Schillens, formerly a Raider himself makes this a logical fit. In his 4 year career with the Raiders, Schillens has recorded 72 catches, for 902 yards and 7 TDs.
Reggie Smith would be a good choice as well, as we all know the troubles the Jets had at the safety position in 2011. They were eaten alive by the likes of Rob Gronkowski and others. Nelson, in his 5 years in the league spent with the Bengals and Jaguars has 39 passes defended and 13 INTs, including 12 passes defended last year and 4 INTs. He would be a strong upgrade over Eric Smith.
Not as sure about the 2 visitors applying for the backup quarterback position. If they want guys that are going to motivate Mark Sanchez, not sure if these guys are it. As mentioned in a previous post, Brady Quinn has not taken a snap in a regular season game since 2009. Drew Stanton, another career backup, hasn’t taken a meaningful snap since 2010. He has 4 career starts under his belt, and has completed 55% of his passes for his career, as well as 5 TDs vs. 9 INTs.
We will have to see how this plays out.
