Well this is certainly odd.
New York Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress was a no-show at practice on Monday and is not expected to be available Tuesday as well.
No, he’s not injured.
He’s handing out turkeys.
Apparently, Burress is in Virginia Beach, Va., his hometown, doing community service.Jets head coach Rex Ryan confirmed that he agreed, “a while ago” to give Burress these two personal days off. Unfortunately for the Jets, the practice schedule for this week’s crucial game against the Buffalo Bills will only give Burress limited time to prepare.
Ryan, in his news conference, didn’t disclose anything, only saying, “He’s got a personal day today and tomorrow. I’ll just leave it at that.”
ESPN’s Josina Anderson tweeted Monday that she was informed by Burress’ wife that Plaxico is handling “philanthropic business” in the Virginia Beach area. He was planning to visit his old high school, meet with kids and distribute Thanksgiving turkeys to low-income families.
A team spokesman confirmed that Burress is in Virginia, doing community work.
Not to disrespect the impact that community work provides, but if this service is not related to Burress’ probation in connection with his illegal weapons charge, then the Jets and Burress have their priorities completely backwards.
The football season goes from September to February. That leaves 7 months for a player to do as much community service as possible. With a 5-5 record, the Jets can hardly afford another loss this season if they hope to make the playoffs.
Burress needs to be on the practice field with quarterback Mark Sanchez.
While Burress leads the Jets with six touchdown catches, his 30 catches on 68 targets is the worst ratio on the team.
