Santonio Holmes and Jets not getting it done

7 games into the 2011 season, the New York Jets had to expect more from Santonio Holmes and Dustin Keller.

With QB Mark Sanchez asked to air the ball out more, the Jets receivers expected to benefit nicely.

That hasn’t happened.

The Jets leader in receptions?  That would be Keller with 25.

Holmes is next with 22 receptions in 7 games and RB LaDainian Tomlinson is third with 20.  Paltry numbers in the NFL these days.

Consider this:  The Pittsburgh Steelers have 3 receivers with at least 30 catches including TE Heath Miller with 30.   The Washington Redskins have 3 receivers with at least 25 catches. Heck, even the Cincinnati Bengals have 3 receivers with more catches than Holmes.

Is it a matter of Sanchez not getting the ball to his receivers or his receivers not making plays and getting open?

As to Holmes, he was signed to a major contract this season and he hasn’t come close to earning it.   His comments to the media have put added pressure on him and he needs to figure out a way to straighten it out.  Fast.

Too many recievers and a sub par offensive line without Nick Mangold will do that. Once and if the jets establish themselves as not necessarily a ground and pound team, but a team that can push for yards on the ground and create more favorable match ups with their high quality recievers then and only then can they move forward. It was as if though the Chicago bears tried to turn into the Indianapolis Colts over night which…….. Come on let’s be honest can’t be done. Shonne Green isn’t a running back to hang your team on. He may have a few bursts but you don’t go from Curtis Martin to Thomas Jones to Shonne Green. We all know Lt is old and he’s there more to catch the ball on third down. What the need to improve is the run game and emphasize on the good recievers they have in holmes, buress, tight end Keller and let the rookies develop as greatful to have the ball thrown to them as opposed to everybody believing that the ball is owed to them. Protect Sanchez establish a run game and for the love of God somebody pressure the opposing qb and there will be changes.
