Jets coach can’t figure out Cromartie

It can’t be a good sign when your Defensive coordinator can’t figure out which player he’s going to get on any given Sunday, but that’s exactly what is happening with Jets coach Mike Pettine and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

When asked about Cromartie’s play, and his habit of having either great or poor games, Pettine was at a loss.

“I’m not sure,” Pettine said. “That’s something we’ve had many discussions about behind closed doors. . . . I’m not sure. It could be a horoscope thing. I’m at a loss. I think we’re all searching for that answer.”

Pettine admitted to the frustration of not knowing which Cromartie would be playing each week and makes it a point to check in with the sideline during each game to get a reading.

“That’s something I’ll usually ask [defensive backs coach] Dennis Thurman on the headset,” he said. “I’ll say, ‘which Cro do we got today? Do we got the good Cro or do we got the bad Cro?’”

Not a ringing endorsement in any way.

As for Cromartie, he’s had solid games (Jacksonville) and just plain awful games (Oakland, Dallas).

We’ll see who shows up to play San Diego this week, Cromartie’s former team.
