Interesting comments from New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum today to the Media on the Derrick Mason trade to Houston for a 7th round pick.
Tannenbaum cited the on-field performance from Mason as the main reason for the deal. “Suffice it to say, things didn’t work out on the field with Derrick. We were committed to trying to make it work, getting him to play better on the field, at a level he was accustomed to and what were were expecting.” Any comments that Mason made after the Baltimore game “had nothing to to do” with the trade nor were any other off-the-field concerns a factor.
In addition, Tannenbaum said that had Houston not initiated a phone call yesterday, Mason would still be a Jet.
Both Jets head coach Rex Ryan and Tannenbaum spoke to Mason last night, and Tannenbaum said Mason was “initially surprised.”
