New kickoff rule eliminated Jets need for Brad Smith

If you watched last night’s five preseason games, there was a common theme to them all.

Touchbacks.

The goal from the NFL moving kickoffs this year to the 35 yard line from the 30, was to reduce injuries.  An extra five yards would help kickers produce more touchbacks which would limit kickoff returns.

Last night in the Ravens-Eagles game, there were five kickoffs resulting in touchbacks.

In the Jaguars-Pats game, there were two touchbacks.

In the Broncos-Cowboys game, there were five touchbacks.

In Seahawks-Chargers, there were two touchbacks.

The New York Jets loved Brad Smith’s kick returns, but with the NFL trying to limit injuries, they just may have eliminated the Jets need for Smith.
