The New York Jets have a need.
No, it’s not at the WR position where the team is expected to re-sign Santonio Holmes and make a play at either Braylon Edwards, Plaxico Burress or Randy Moss.
No, it’s not at the CB position where the team will make a run at Nnamdi Asomugha or Antonio Cromartie
The Jets need someone to sack the quarterback. Who was the last guy the team could rely on? Mark Gastineau?
It’s time for Osi Umenyiora.
It is being reported by WFAN in New York that the Umenyiora will not be reporting for work when the doors to New York Giants camp open today.
Umenyiora has been open about demanding a new contract or a trade to a team that will make him one of the league’s highest-paid players at his position. Adam Shefter has even wondered out loud as to whether the Giants, already over the cap, will simply drop the DE.
For head coach Rex Ryan, nothing is more important to his defensive system of pressuring and confusing the QB than a defensive end who can get to the QB quickly. Umenyiora is that guy. The 29 year old has 60 sacks in 104 career games.
The Jets need to figure out a way to get creative and get Osi.
